Copper Ingot Found in World's Oldest Shipwreck in Antalya

Akdeniz University Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Protection and Restoration of Cultural Heritage Assoc. Dr. Hakan Öniz said, that nearly 100 copper ingots were extracted from the oldest shipwreck in the world in Antalya, "There are five of these ingots in the world. Now was found close to one hundred in this shipwreck. İt is scientifically valuable."

Öniz said that they were trying to uncover human remains in the sea at the conference titled "Underwater Archeology in Antalya" at the Atatürk Conference Hall at Akdeniz University Campus, within the scope of the 813th year of the Conquest of Antalya.

Pointing out that Akdeniz University is among the five leading universities in the world in the field of underwater archeology, Öniz noted that the university's ship also provides training to international students.

Noting that all the inventory used in the name of underwater archeology in the world is available in them, Öniz reported that they detected 39 shipwrecks on the shores of Antalya, Mersin and Adana in 2018.

Stating that they found 32 shipwrecks last year in their surface study in just one month, Öniz stated that these shipwrecks showed the sea trade methods and human lifestyles thousands of years ago.

Stating that they found flasks belonging to the Ottoman soldiers in the excavations, Öniz stated that the desalination works of the flasks in the Alanya Museum continue.
